Free Public Transport for School Students with a SmartRider Card
All students with a valid Smartrider card will travel for free if the card has a minimum balance of $5. Students must tap on and tap off for the journey, however they won’t get charged. All other students will need to pay a fare.
The SmartRider card offers several benefits:
- No cash required: Students no longer need to carry cash for bus travel.
- Easy travel: As long as students swipe correctly, they will not incur any charges.
To apply for a Student SmartRider or replacement card please visit SmartRider Student Application or complete a manual application form at our school front office which will be sent free of charge.
*Please note the Geraldton Bus Depot are unable to issue Student SmartRider cards.
Cards can be recharged with money on the bus (but only with cash $5, $10 or$15) or via the Bpay details on the SmartRider card, please note reloading via Bpay does take up to 5 days to clear.
Students must tag on and off each journey to receive the free travel or they will receive a default fare. If their SmartRider goes into a negative balance as a result, they will not have access to free travel.
How the SmartRider card works:
- When the student swipes on correctly, the bus reader will show a green or orange light.
- Green: Appropriate balance is available.
- Orange: Low balance.
- If the student does not swipe on correctly, the reader will beep and show a red light.
- Red: Indicates no balance, a damaged card, or an issue with the bus reader. If this occurs, the student should present their card to the bus driver for troubleshooting.
It is important that students swipe on and off correctly for the card to work as intended.
